NEW YORK -- "Super Bowl 50" just looks better than "Super Bowl L." X, V and I are nicely symmetrical, but with the unbalanced L in line for the 2015 season, the NFL decided to scrap the Roman numerals for a year. The championship game in Santa Clara, California, on Feb. 7, 2016, will be known as "Super Bowl 50." The league has been contemplating this eventuality for nearly a decade, ever since the 40th edition ended with XL -- which is not only visually pleasing but seemed an appropriate description of the extravaganza the Super Bowl has become. Starting last April, NFL executives viewed more than 70 potential logos for the 2016 game. They found its hard to build an attractive image around what league vice-president Jaime Weston calls "the lonely L." Using the big 5-0 instead had the added benefit of emphasizing the significance of the Super Bowls 50th iteration. That allows the NFL to celebrate the milestone all season long. "Its a much bolder statement," said Weston, the NFLs VP for brand and creative. In 2017 in Houston, though, the game will revert to "Super Bowl LI." Adding that I to the end squares off the L and makes it more adaptable graphically, Weston said. And the league has no desire to ditch the Roman numerals for good. The NFL first started using them for the fifth Super Bowl in 1971. They have a practical value for a league whose regular season and championship game take place in different calendar years. Then there are the more intangible benefits. "It really does differentiate us," Weston said. The NFL held focus groups before the 40th Super Bowl and found that fans could associate logos from years past with their memories of watching that particular game. Even if they might not remember that X means 10, V is five, I is one and L is 50 -- let alone how to represent 40. A new letter wont come into play until the 90th edition in 2056: Super Bowl XC. By TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button and TSN Hockey Managing Editor Steve Dryden Don Maloney said it. Surely, other GMs are thinking it. That is, wouldn’t it be good if NHL teams had the option to send their best teen prospects to the AHL rather than be required - under terms of the NHL-CHL agreement - to return them to the CHL until their major junior eligibility runs out. We all understand top junior players are valuable assets for their junior Clubs,” Don Maloney told “However, for any elite junior player who has played three full CHL seasons, the option to place the player in the AHL would be invaluable to us and a real benefit to the player’s development. Of course, the CHL would prefer the status quo remains because its main players, its main attractions, would play in the Quebec, Ontario and Western leagues as long as possible to drive revenues. It’s a reasonable perspective. After all, the CHL is producing a large percentage of players and the development model needs to be self-sustaining. “Any change - even on a restricted or limited basis - would be devastating to the CHL,” NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told “So, no, I dont see this changing in the near future.” The current agreement doesn’t expire until June, 2020 - and Daly said, We actually surveyed the GMs before last years CHL deal and it wasnt an overwhelming need” - so there’s no reason to believe any change is imminent. But should it be a one-size-fits-all system for CHLers? Consider this: Players not drafted from the CHL are now eligible to be sent to the AHL as teens. Is it time a similar option existed for exceptional major junior players. The answer is, yes, provided limitations are placed on such a system. Here’s our criteria for major junior-eligible players being sent to the AHL: 1. Players must have been selected in the first round of the NHL draft and have played three full seasons in the CHL. 2. Players must pass a tryout period – say 9 games in the AHL to mirror the NHL 9-game tryout period - to prove they have effectively outgrown the CHL. Here’s the logic: 1. Only NHL-rated elite players (e.g. first rounders) would be included to guard against a new system cutting too deeply into the CHL talent pool. 2. CHL teams should consider three full seasons fair return on their investments. Consider that NHL players are technically free agents after going through the three-year entry level system. If you can play in the NHL as a 19-year-old, why not the AHL? Now before you think that there are going to be 30 elite CHLers being sent to the AHL each year, let us tell you how many we think wwould be sent to the AHL this season if that criteria were followed: 9.dddddddddddd And that number includes Sam Reinhart (Kootenay), who is expected to be sent back to their CHL teams, plus Bo Horvat (London) and Curtis Lazar (Edmonton), who may well remain with their NHL teams. That’s nine players – and it could be as few as seven - spread over 60 teams in three leagues. The others on the list of CHLers/AHLers are Darnell Nurse (SSM), Sam Morin (Rimouski), Max Domi (London), Josh Morrissey (Prince Albert), Shea Theodore (Seattle) and Nick Ritchie (Peterborough). By the way, Jonathan Drouin would go back to Halifax, not the AHL, because he has played 2-1/2 seasons, not three full seasons. So, under this system, some teams would suffer more than others: notably London, potentially losing two players to the AHL. But that’s to be expected when any change is made and, not to minimize the impact, but in time there would be a new normal and acceptance that that’s just the way it is and greater flexibility is generally for the greater good. And a final thought: Let’s not forget that some of these players have already had exposure to the AHL – most prominently Morrissey. The 2013-14 WHL defenceman of the year runner-up played eight regular season games and 20 in the 2014 AHL playoffs, where he shone with two goals and 9 points for the Calder Cup-finalist St. John’s IceCaps. It seems counter-intuitive the AHL isn’t an option for him this season. Here are nine CHLers – including current NHLers Horvat, Lazar and Reinhart - who would be candidates to play in the AHL this season if rules were amended to permit first round draft picks with three full seasons experience to play in the top minor pro league. LONDON -- Laura Robson gave her home fans something to cheer at Wimbledon on Tuesday, becoming the first British woman to defeat a top-10 player at the All England Club in 15 years when she beat 10th-seeded Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the grass-court tournament. The 19-year-old Robson followed in the footsteps of Sam Smith, who upset No. 7 Conchita Martinez in 1998 at Wimbledon. Robson, a former junior champion at Wimbledon, entered Court 1 with a lot of pressure on her shoulders after seven British players had lost their first-round matches. Her victory created a huge buzz on social networks, with even Britains Prime minister David Cameron taking to Twitter to comment on Robsons win, her third over a top-10 player in Grand Slam. "Great to hear (at)LauraRobson5 beat the number 10 seed Maria Kirilenko at (hashtag)Wimbledon," Cameron wrote. A couple of hours later, her compatriot Tara Moore lost 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 to Kaia Kanepi to leave Robson and Andy Murray as the only remaining Britons in singles. Amid stinging criticism from the local media, Robson jumped to the defence of her fellow players when asked what was wrong with womens tennis in Britain. "Nothing," she said. "I think everyone had tough matches. Before this week, everyone was playing really well. So its unfortunate that no one else made the second round. But that happens sometimes. Last year I lost in the first round. So, you go through stages of ups and downs like everyone else." Playing with Murray, Robson won silver at the London Olympics in the mixed doubles competition. But she first caught the spotlight overseas last year at the U.S. Open, when she defeated Kim Clijsters in the Belgians final singles match of her career. Robson then beat Li Na to become the first British woman to reach the fourth round at any Grand Slam event since 1991. Although Kirilenko did not make a single unforced error in the first set, the 38th-ranked Robson got off to a strong start, using her big serve to keep her opponent at bay. She then had to overcome a bout of nervousness at 4-1 in the second set, when she dropped her serve for the first time following a string of unforced errors. "I think (this win) was a big one for me because although I really like grass and I seem to play well on it, Ive never actually done overly well here," Robson said after wrapping up the match with a forehand winner. "Ive only made the second round once. So, yeah, it was a big win for me. I think it was good that I managed to tough it out after I got so nervous in the second set." Robson said shell try not to get carried away, but that she believes in her chances to make a deep run in the tournament. "I think I go out against the top players with nothing to lose, and Ive always been like that," she said. Facing the Vancouver Canucks may not be a boon to the Calgary Flames, who are riding their longest losing streak since setting a team record nearly three decades ago. The Flames will try to snap their seven-game skid by beating the Canucks on the road for the first time in three years Saturday night. The action can be heard live on TSN Radio 1040 Vancouver at 5pm pt/6pm mt. Calgary (17-15-2) has been outscored 23-11 while losing seven in a row in regulation, the teams longest skid since dropping a franchise-record 11 straight from Dec. 14, 1985 to Jan. 7, 1986. The Flames extended the current slide Friday with a 2-1 loss to Dallas. We had such a great start to the year, we dont want to just waste it in just this one stretch here, center Joe Colborne said. We trust our leadership, we trust our systems right now and its just a matter of going out and doing it. Calgary hasnt done much lately against the Canucks (18-11-2), losing eight in a row after falling 4-2 at home in the season opener Oct. 8. The Flames have also dropped seven straight visits to Vancouver. While Calgary is trying to win at Rogers Arena for the first time since Dec. 23, 2011, the Canucks are looking to continue that dominance in an effort to end their own five-game slide - a stetch in which theyve been outscored 19-7. Vancouvers losing streak is its longest since a seven-game skid Jan. 27-Feb. 8. Obviously every game is important, but the way the things have went in the past, we have to make sure were ready to compete, right wing Derek Dorsett said. Obviously, Calgary coming in, were right neck-and-neck with them. Theyre kind of in the similar situation weve been in. Both teams are going to be desperate. Itll be an intense game. Vancouver needs to get its power play going after failing to score on 18 chances in the last six games, including an 0-for-4 effort in Wednesdays 2-0 home loss to the Stars. The top line of center Henrik Sedin, left wing Daniel Sedin and right wing Radim Vrbata has been held without a point for three games while combining for a minus-12. Still, the Sedins are tied with a team-high 26 points, while Vrbata is three back. Other teams really key on that line, coach Willie Desjardins said. We gotta have secondary scoring. Thats what makes us good. If I gotta keep playing that line, they get tired when theyre playing. Now, you gotta have scoring off the other units. Not a single Canucks player has scored more than once in the past five games, though Henrik Sedin has 14 points in the last 10 meetings with the Flames. He set up both goals by Daniel Sedin in a 5-1 home win over Calgary on April 13. Jiri Hudler scored for the Flames in the season opener, and he had a point in four straight games before being held without one against Dallas. The right wings 13 goals lead the team, while his 30 points are second to Mark Giordanos 32. Giordano leads all NHL defensemen in scoring after collecting eight points in 10 games. However, he has just two in his last 10 visits to Vancouver. Michael Kors Boxing Day Sale Canada . Still, after the starts theyve had the last couple of seasons, they cant help but feel good about it. Brian Bogusevic drove in the go-ahead run after Jose Altuve scored on Jordan Pachecos throwing error to tie it in the eighth inning and the Astros beat the Colorado Rockies 3-2 Sunday to win their opening series. The Astros lost their first five games last season and dropped eight in a row to start the 2010 season. They have a winning record for the first time since they were 51-50 after games on July 29, 2009. "We want to instil winning in all of us," Houston starter Bud Norris said. "When you come to the ballpark, you expect to win and were trying to build something. Weve got the talent to do it." Houston manager Brad Mills is happy about the start, but he certainly wasnt getting ahead of himself. "Were talking about three games -- winning two of them (but) moving forward, I think they know and we know that they can do it," Mills said. Altuve singled with two outs in the eighth inning before J.D. Martinez hit a sharp ground ball that bounced off the glove of reliever Rex Brothers (0-1) for another single. Pachecos bad throw to first base from third allowed Carlos Lee to reach and Altuve to score. Bogusevics grounder to right field put Houston ahead and chased Brothers. Brothers breakdown spoiled a solid effort by Juan Nicasio in his return from a broken neck. He allowed five hits and one run in seven innings in his first start since breaking his neck when he fell after being hit in the head by a line drive on August 5. "I wasnt nervous, I was feeling good," Nicasio said. "Thank you God, because I wanted to have the opportunity to get to the mound, I want to go to compete. Just get it out of the way. Its time." Former staff ace Brett Myers pitched a scoreless ninth for the save in his first appearance as Houstons closer. The Rockies led for most of the game after Wilin Rosario gave Colorado a 2-0 leead with his two-run homer to left-centre in the fourth inning.dddddddddddd "Because of our inability to do anything offensively than the one swing Wilin Rosario took, we put ourselves in a position where any little mistake that gets made is going to get magnified, and potentially cost us the game," Colorado manager Jim Tracy said. "And thats exactly what happened." Norris yielded four hits and two runs and struck out eight in seven innings. Wilton Lopez (1-0) got the last two outs of the eighth for the win. Nicasio, who was 4-4 in 13 starts as a rookie last season, looked strong in his return from the terrifying injury. He was hurt when Washingtons Ian Desmond hit him with a line drive and sent him to the ground. He had to undergo surgery to have two pins inserted into his cracked C-1 vertebra and also had a small metal plate attached to the back of his neck. He went 2-0 with a 3.90 ERA in six games this spring to prepare for his comeback. Altuve tripled in the fourth inning and scored on a double by Lee to cut Colorados lead to 2-1. Nicasio retired the next six batters before walking Altuve with one out in the sixth. Martinez hit a long flyball to centre field after that, but Tyler Colvin chased it down and snagged it with an over-the-shoulder catch. Nicasio allowed a single in a scoreless seventh before being replaced by Brothers for the eighth. Troy Tulowitzki, who was hit by a pitch in the left elbow by ex-teammate Ubaldo Jimenez of Cleveland a week ago, was plunked on the hip in the sixth inning. He was OK, though, trotting to first base after being hit. Norris then walked Jason Giambi for the third time, but Michael Cuddyer grounded into a force out leaving runners at the corners. Norris escaped the jam by striking out Rosario to end the inning. NOTES: The Astros claimed OF Justin Maxwell off waivers from the New York Yankees on Sunday. The Astros will make a corresponding roster move when he reports on Monday. ... Giambi is tied with Mark McGwire for 38th in major league history with 1,317 walks after three on Sunday. ORLANDO, Fla. -- After enduring a rough stretch over the past two months, the Indiana Pacers will enter the playoffs on a bit of a roll. Rasual Butler and Chris Copeland each scored 19 points as the Pacers rested their key players and cruised to a 101-86 victory over the Orlando Magic in the regular-season finale for both teams. The Pacers sat three starters -- Paul George, Lance Stephenson and David West -- and played George Hill and Roy Hibbert sparingly. But they got good output from their understudies in the second half to put the game out of reach. It was the second time in two weeks Indiana won with starters on the bench. Coach Frank Vogel pulled all five starters during their victory over Milwaukee last week. "Theres always value in winning games, but anytime you have bench guys that have a chance to get extended minutes, thats really good for their rhythm and confidence," Vogel said. "Weve had pretty good health from our starters most of the season. So those bench guys havent had opportunities to get extended minutes like this. So the Milwaukee game was good and this game was good." The Eastern Conferences top seed ended the season winning three of four to shake off a nasty late-season slump. The victory was just Indianas 10th in their last 23 games. Still for a team expected to be one of the defending champion Miami Heats biggest impediments to a third consecutive NBA championship, its an encouraging boost for the post-season. The Pacers will open the playoffs against eighth-seed Atlanta. "Through all the ups and downs, were still locked into the No. 1 seed so we have to tip our hat for that," Hill said. "But its a new game now. Its playoff time -- 0-0. Its the first to 16 (wins)." The Magic trimmed what had been an 18-point, second-half deficit down to 12 in the fourth quarter before another late surge by Indiana helped secure the victory. Indiana also knocked down 11 3-pointers, and racked up 40 points in the paint. The Pacers didnt look short-handed as they went back and forth with the Magic in the first half, and took a six-point halftime lead. Evan Turner had 11 first-half points, including one of the Indianas six 3-pointers in the opening 24 minutes. The Magic played 11 players in the half, with nine of them scoring. Orlando struggled from the field, though, shooting just 37 per cent. Maurice Harkless led the Magic with 14 points, and ETwaun Moore added 13 for an Orlando team that ended the season losing 16 of 20 and had the fifth-worst record in franchise history. It was not a huge surprise for a franchise looking toward future. To help with the ongoing rebuilding process theyll have two lottery picks in Junes NBA draft. The plan is to add more building blocks around rookie guard Victor Oladipo, and big man Nik Vucevic. That doesnt mean there were any happy feelings Wednesday night. "Im pretty sure everybody in the locker room is tired of losing and its something that we dont want to do again next year," Harkless said. "Hopefully its something that we can fix." Now that their brief rest period is done, Hill said he feels like he and his teammates are ready for the challenge that awaits them. "Its going to be tough, but nobody gets us without having the advantage of being at home in a seven-game series," he said. "Its great without any back to backs, which is really the toughest part of the season. Its just great, now that we have some rest, our guys can prepare to go from game to game." NOTES: Orlando played without starters Jameer Nelson and Vucevic. Nelson missed his third straight game with a strained left groin, and Vucevic was out for the seventh consecutive game with a sore left Achilles....The Magic were just 7-42 this season when their opponent scored 100 or more points. SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Defenceman Nick Holden scored the overtime winner as the Springfield Falcons edged the St. Johns IceCaps 4-3 in American Hockey League action Saturday. St. Johns defenceman Paul Postma scored with 38 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime. Danny Taylor made 38 saves as the Falcons (6-5-0) won their third straight game, and second straight in overtime. Springfield defeated Hershey 4-3 on Friday night.dddddddddddd "Winning these last two in overtime at home are pretty impressive character wins for our guys," said Springfield coach Rob Riley. "Its really a confidence booster for our players." Cam Atkinson, Andrew Joudrey and Nick Drazenovic also scored for Springfield. Jason Jaffray had the other two goals for St. Johns (5-2-2), while David Aebischer made 21 saves. ST. LOUIS -- Lance Lynn needed only 16 days to get even with the San Diego Padres. The St. Louis right-hander pitched six strong innings to help the Cardinals beat the Padres 4-2 on Friday night for their third straight win. Matt Adams, Kolten Wong and Oscar Taveras hit RBI singles for St. Louis. San Diego has lost two in a row after a five-game winning streak. Lynn (13- gave up one run and six hits, striking out six and walking one. The Padres handed him a 3-1 defeat on July 29. Lynn actually felt as though he pitched better in San Diego last month when he allowed one earned run and four hits over six innings. "Tonight was a grind from the get-go," Lynn said. "It could have been better." St. Louis manager Mike Matheny disagreed, saying Lynn was at the top of his game. "Lance was great," he said. "Another good night of using his fastball, mixing in the two-seam and four-seam. He had a real nice feel for all of his pitches." Lynn has allowed two runs or fewer in 11 of his last 13 starts. "He just goes out there and battles every day and gives us solid starts," Wong said. "You have a pitcher like that, it definitely increases the morale of the team and makes us want to continue to play well." The Padres took a grind-it-out approach at the plate, fouling off 21 pitches in Lynns 102-pitch stint. Pat Neshek posted his fourth save. Regular closer Trevor Rosenthal was given the night off after two successive appearances. Pinch-hitter Yasmani Grandal homered with two outs in the ninth for the Padres. After Chris Nelson doubled, Neshek struck out Will Venable. Tyson Ross (11-11) gave up three runs and five hits over six innings. He walked four and hit two batters. Ross walked the first three batters in the first, and Adams hit an RBI single. Jhonny Peralta followed with a run-scoring groundout. "I didnt have fastball command the first inning," Ross said. "It was that simple. I put myself in a big hole, and they capitalized on it." Wong pushed the lead to 3-0 with an RBI single in the fourth. It was his team-high 27th RBI with two outs. San Diego got within 3-1 on a double by Venable in the fifth. Lynn retired Tommy Medica and Seth Smith with runners on second and third to preserve the lead. The Padres have scored in the ninth inning in the first two games of the series. "These guys play hard," San Diego manager Bud Black said of the Cardinals. "They play all 54 outs and beyond at times. Thats just the way we play. Its what we do." Taveras had a pinch-hit single in the eighth. The Cardinals are 22-7 at home against San Diego since 2006. TRAINERS ROOM Padres: 1B Yonder Alonso is on the 15-day disabled list after straining his right forearm in Tuesdays 4-1 win over the Rockies. It is his second stint on the DL this season. He missed 30 games with right wrist tendinitis from June 19 to July 26. Cardinals: C Yadier Molina was able to do some light throwing on Thursday, 35 days after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb. Matheny indicated that Molina is progressing at a faster rate than first expected. He was projected to miss eight to 12 weeks, but appears ahead of schedule. "I cant wait to grab a bat and see how the hand reacts," Molina said. UP NEXT St. Louis RHP Shelby Miller (8-9, 4.17) faces RHP Jesse Hahn (7-3, 2.52) in the third game of the four-game series on Saturday. Miller has given up a team-high 17 home runs and walked a team-high 58 batters in 133 2-3 innings. Ugg Boots Green Monday Sale . The Pittsburgh Pirates manager hasnt thought once about stepping back in either. Which makes Hurdle all the more in awe of Colorados Jamie Moyer. The 49-year-old Moyer is only five years younger than Hurdle, and while Hurdle hasnt played in a game in more than two decades, Moyer is still out there finding ways to get guys out. Moyer became the oldest pitcher to win a major league game after working seven solid innings in a 5-3 victory over San Diego last week. "Its a wonderful story," Hurdle said. "Its a story that only sport can come up with." Moyers chance to break his own record will have to wait a day at least. Colorados game with the Pirates on Monday night was postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up on Wednesday as part of a doubleheader beginning at 12:35 p.m. The Rockies havent adjusted their rotation yet, though Moyer is expected to pitch sometime during the series. The left-hander surrendered six hits in seven innings against the Padres, mixing speeds and using pinpoint control while picking up his first win in nearly two years. "Hes going to battle and hes going to compete and you need to be patient," Hurdle said. Something the Pirates have struggled to do this season. Pittsburgh is last in the majors in batting average (.202), runs (30) and next to last in hhome runs (seven).dddddddddddd Yet the Pirates have managed to be a competitive 6-9 while facing the hardest opening month schedule in the National League. Hurdle expects the bats to come around eventually, though Moyers unusual stuff will present another challenge. "You need to try and beat him with singles," Hurdle said. "From my perception across the field for many, many years now. He definitely plays bigger than he is." Hurdle managed against Moyer in the 2007 National League Divisional Series when Hurdle was with Colorado and Moyer was throwing for Philadelphia. Moyer -- a few weeks short of turning 45 at the time -- allowed one run over six innings in Game 3 but took the loss as the Rockies advanced to the NLCS with a sweep. "He threw the best game of the three games we matched up with the Phillies," Hurdle said. "It was just that mindset. He sinks the ball. He changes speeds. He will pitch in. He stays out of the heart of the plate." Kevin Correia (1-0, 1.50 ERA) will start Tuesdays game for Pittsburgh. Correia skipped his scheduled start last Saturday with pain in his side. Tests came back negative and Correias improved significantly over the weekend. James McDonald (0-1, 3.45) will start Wednesdays first game for the Pirates, with Charlie Morton (0-1, 3.60) getting the nod in the second game. Colorados rotation has not been set. BEIJING, China - Canadas Travis Gerrits won his first aerials World Cup event on Sunday with a score of 126.70 at Chinas Olympic Birds Nest Stadium. Gerrits, from Milton, Ont., beat out three strong Chinese competitors, and the rest of a strong international field, to not only win the competition but also secure the tours yellow jersey as the FIS Aerial World Cup leader. He completed a perfect quadruple twisting, triple-flip in his final jump. "I am super stoked to have won today," Gerrits said. "I couldnt have done it without the help and strategy of my coaches and my entire team. To do it in the Birds Nest was truly incredible. I am truly grateful for everyones support." Also competing for Canada was Montreals Jean-Christophe Andre, who placed 13th. In womens action on Saturday, Sabrina Guerin of Laval, Que., finished 24th. DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Colby Rasmus drove in two runs, Dioner Navarro hit an RBI double and the Toronto Blue Jays topped the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 on Friday. Pedro Alvarez doubled twice and scored both runs for Pittsburgh. Rasmus hit an RBI single in the first inning off Gerrit Cole. Navarros double scored Rasmus. Cole struck out two and gave up three hits in two innings. After spending last season with the Chicago Cubs, Navarro signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the Blue Jays in the off-season. Navarro, who batted .300 with 13 home runs for the Cubs, said he has been taking extra swings to improve at the plate. His main focus, however, is getting to know the pitching staff. "Every time I get the opportunity, I jump in the cage. But right now its all about the pitchers," Navarro said. "Especially with me coming to a new team (and) seeing a lot of new faces. Its all about them. I will get my swings in. I will do my work." Blue Jays starter Mark Buehrle allowed one earned run in two innings. He gave up two hits, one walk and struck out one. Blue Jays outfield prospect Ricardo Nanita hit an RBI triple in the eighth. Matt Hague hit an RBI single and Gaby Sanchez doubled for the Pirates. Toronto star Jose Bautista, who homered and doubled twice in the first two exhibition games, was given the day off. STARTING TIME Blue Jays: Buehrle threw 43 pitches. He said his command was good overall, but he felt like he had trouble keeping his sinker in the strike zone. "I wasnt happy with how sharp it was today," he said. "I wasnt throwing too many sinkers for strikes. But its the first outing. Things are going to turn and get better as we go along." Manager John Gibbons disagreed and said the left-hander looked better than he did during camp last season. "I thought Buehrle for his first start was really good," Gibbons said. "I told him I thought he was a little sharper in this camp than he was (at the same point) last year.ddddddddddddIt showed today, thats a good sign." Pirates: Cole had a rocky first inning, giving up three hits and two runs. But the right-hander settled down in the second, striking out Dan Johnson and Ryan Goins and getting Maicer Izturis on a grounder. "I dont overcook their first outing," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said of his pitchers. "They need to get out there. They need to reacquaint themselves with adrenaline, mound, rhythm and all that." "I thought Coles second inning was much more effective, just in terms of downhill plane, getting the ball downhill, mixing in the breaking ball." HAPPY TO BE BACK For the first time since sustaining a season-ending forearm injury last May, right-hander Brandon Morrow appeared in a game with the Blue Jays. Morrow allowed two hits and one run in two innings. He said he felt comfortable on the mound and was happy to finally see game action. "I felt great. I felt on time with my delivery," he said. "I was most happy with the life I had on my fastball and did what I wanted to." Navarro said he felt Morrow had strong command of his pitches, despite giving up a run. "He kept the ball down good, threw a couple good sliders and a couple good splitters," Navarro said. "I know people want to see zeroes on the board, but these guys are locating their fastball and then working off the fastball. As spring training goes on, velocity is going to go up." TRAINERS ROOM Sergio Santos was scheduled to appear in relief for the Blue Jays on Friday, but the right-hander was told to stay home after getting a stomach virus on Thursday night. Santos, who was 1-1 with a 1.75 ERA in 29 appearances last season, is expected to return to the Blue Jays on Saturday. His first outing has been rescheduled for March 4 against Philadelphia in Clearwater. Chad Jenkins took Santos place and allowed no hits in one inning of relief. The Vancouver Canucks unloaded an unhappy veteran centre, acquiring three assets in return as new GM Jim Benning starts off his tenure with a major trade. Numbers Game examines the Anaheim Ducks acquiring Ryan Kesler. The Ducks Get: C Ryan Kesler and a third-round pick in 2015. Kesler, 29, has been a very good two-way centre for most of the past seven seasons, scoring at least 20 goals in all six full seasons while missing 31 games during the lockout-shortened 2013 season. He scored 25 goals last season while playing a career-high 21:49 per game, and while Kesler didnt match the outstanding possession numbers he had from 2009 through 2012, he still had positive possession numbers despite facing high quality opposition and starting more of his shifts in the defensive zone, qualities that put him with a sound group of two-way forwards. Holding a no-trade clause, Kesler had control over the situation and that limited Vancouvers options. In Anaheim, Kesler slides into the second-line spot, behind Ryan Getzlaf, and Keslers presence may even free-up Getzlaf a little bit more -- as Getzlaf typically faces a high calibre of opposition with more defensive zone starts. If Kesler takes some of that responsibility, it may allow Getzlaf to get more favourable offensive matchups. While Kesler is a pretty effective shooter, 9.9% or above every year since 2006-2007, his on-ice shooting percentage (which includes the shooting of all others on the ice with him at 5on-5) was his lowest in that span last season, when he played primarily with Chris Higgins on left wing and then a rotating cast of right wingers. The positive of that is that, statistically, hes likely to have better luck next year, in terms of other players shooting percentage, so there may be room for a boost in Keslers production. The Ducks have a variety of young wingers that will be bucking for playing time and a couple of Patrick Maroon, Jakob Silfverberg, Kyle Palmieri, Matt Beleskey, Emerson Etem and Devante Smith-Pelly should have a shot to play on Keslers wings. Anticipating some boost in Keslers production operates on the assumption that he will be getting first-unit power play time because Bonino held that spot with the Ducks last season. For as much as Keslers reputation is built on being a two-way player who can check the oppositions best forwards, hes also been a productive triggerman on the Vancouver power play, ranking among the leaders in power play goals per minute of 5-on-4 play over the past five seasons. Kesler, in addition to being a valuable two-way forward, also comes at a reasonable cost for a veteran player. He has two years remaining on his contract, with a $5-million cap hit. If he plays well over the next couple seasons, there may be a decent chance to get him extended or re-signed, considering that Kesler virtually hand-picked his trade destination. The third-round pick offers about a 30% of chance of netting an NHLer, with maybe a six or seven percent chance of yielding a top-six forward, top-four defenceman or starting goaltender. The Canucks Get: C Nick Bonino, D Luca Sbisa, a first-round and third-round pick.. Bonino is a 26-year-old centre coming off a career year, in the first full season that hes played in the NHL. Boninos 22 goals and 49 points were solid showings, tied for 75th and 72nd, respectively and he scored 20 points on the power play. Bonino has not typically faced tough opposition and has always started more shifts in the offensive zone, yet his possession numbers havent been very good. He was just below break-even last season for the Ducks, but was productive, in part, because he had a high on-ice shooting percentage, which makes Bonino something of a mirror image of Kesler, more likely to see his production fall. Hes not as good, but there was no chance the Ducks were getting a better centre in exchange for a player with a no-trade clause that wanted to be moved out of town. That said, Bonino is an okay option as a second or third-line centre for the Canucks. An inexpensive option for a rebuilding team, signed for three more years at a total cost of $5.7-million, a very reasonable $1.9-million cap hit. Sbisa, 24, was well on his way to a signficant role before he was bypassed on the Ducks depth chart this season. In the previous two years, he had played all but nine games and was up to a career-high 19:50 average time on ice per game last season. The first-round pick of the Flyers in 2008 appeared to be making progress, but then he sprained his ankle in training camp, and later tore tendon in his hand. Those two injuries cost him 41 games and the Ducks had new defencemen -- Ben Lovejoy, Hampus Lindholm, Sami Vatanen -- pull ahead of Sbisa on the depth chart. So, while Sbisa hasnt really established that he can handle a big role, its not unreasonable for the Canucks to put him on their third pairing next year to see if he can get back on track. Sbisa is under contract for one more season, at a cap hit of $2.175-million, after which he will be a restricted free agent. The 24th pick in the draft has typically yielded an NHL player 70% of the time, with a top-six forward, top-four defenceman or starting goaltender 25% of the time. The third-round pick was subsequently moved to the New York Rangers, to acquire veteran winger Derek Dorsett. Dorsett is a 27-year-old who is a willing scrapper, but has also played some tough minutes in a checking role over the past three seasons, with a lot of defensive zone starts. Dorsett is in the final year of a deal that brings a cap hit of $1.633-million. He will be an unrestricted free agent next summer. Will the Canucks be just as good without Ryan Kesler? Not likely. Does this move put them in a decent position going forward, in terms of having assets that they can use to re-shape the team? For sure. Big changes have begun in Vancouver and the first steps may be back before they are in position to move ahead. For the Ducks, theyve raised exectations with the addition of Kesler. They lost in seven games to the eventual Stanley Cup champs and, justifiably, made a move to improve their odds next season by getting a player that they tried to acquire before the trade deadline last season. ISTANBUL, Turkey -- Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has blasted the media for publicizing his disparaging comments about his forwards, comments he regarded as private and light-hearted. While French television station Canal Plus was waiting for an interview with Mourinho last week in Nyon, Switzerland, it filmed him talking with a Swiss businessman at a sponsor event. Broadcast on Monday, when Chelsea was heading to Istanbul to play Galatasaray in the Champions League last 16, the clip shows Mourinho saying, "The problem with Chelsea is we lack a scorer. I have one (Samuel Etoo) but hes 32. Maybe 35, who knows?" At the pre-match news conference on Tuesday, he told media, "You all should be a bit embarrassed, because its a case of the ethics you have in your work. From my point of view, is it an unhappy comment? Absolutely. But from the ethical point of view, its a real disgrace. "The comment is not obviously a good one, not one I would do in a serious way, not something I would do in an official way in an interview. First of all, because I dont make fun. Secondly, because, if there are managers in the world that really defend their players, I am obviously one of them. And third, becauuse Samuel Etoo is Samuel Etoo.dddddddddddd." While Mourinho was looking at having to rebuild bridges with Etoo, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba in the Champions League knockout stages, he insisted he and Etoo had no issues because of their history. Together, they won the treble in 2010 with Inter Milan; the Champions League, Serie A, and Italian Cup. "It was with him that I had the best ever season of my career," Mourinho said. "Hes one of the few player who is working with me in a second different club, and a manager never does that when he doesnt like the player, doesnt like the person. "There is no story. It was a funny conversation between me and somebody that doesnt belong to the footballing world. We were laughing, as everybody was saying. Its a disgrace that somebody has recorded a private conversation." Also brought up was Monaco striker Radamel Falcao, who Chelsea lost interest in when he was priced too high: "I dont have Falcao but Falcao doesnt have a team," Mourinho said in comments captured by Canal Plus. "Who wants to play in front of 3,000 supporters? If I was one day to go to Monaco it would be at the end (of my career)." ' ' ' Cheap NFL Jerseys China Wholesale Cheap Jerseys Cheap Jerseys From China Cheap Jerseys Free Shipping Cheap Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys supply authentic cheap Jerseys nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys

Iraq beat fierce rival Iran 7-6 in a penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw on Friday, booking a place in the Asian Cup semifinals against South Korea.Iran, which played with ten men after halftime, twice equalized in a four-goal extra-time period to send the match to a lengthy penalty shootout, which ended when Salam Shakir converted after Irans Vahid Amiri hit the post.Iraq captain Younis Mahmoud and Dhurgham Ismail scored in extra time, but Morteza Pouraliganji and a 119th minute goal by Reza Ghoochannejhad levelled the contest.Earlier, Azmoun Sardar opened the scoring in the first half, before the contentious sending off of Irans Mehrdad Pooladi just before half-time for his second yellow card. Ahmed Yasin equalized for Iraq in the 56th. SEATTLE -- Kevin Hogan picked apart Washington State, throwing for 286 yards and three touchdowns, and No. 5 Stanford won its 12th straight with a 55-17 rout of the Cougars on Saturday night. Hogan connected with Devon Cajuste on touchdowns of 57 and 33 yards in the first half then found Michael Rector on a 45-yard TD during a third-quarter blitz where the Cardinal scored 21 points as part of a stretch where they ran just two offensive plays. Jordan Richards and Trent Murphy both returned interceptions 30 yards for touchdowns 2:04 apart in the third quarter as the Cardinal (4-0, 2-0 Pac-12) quickly turned a 17-3 halftime advantage into a 38-3 lead. Richards stepped in front of a pass that floated toward the sideline, while Murphy jumped and stole a screen pass at the line of scrimmage. Hogan finished 16 of 25 passing with his only mistake being a second-quarter pass into the end zone that floated and was intercepted. Hogan was replaced early in the fourth quarter, but Stanford kept scoring. Remound Wright added a 53-yard TD run and Barry Saunders scored on a 22-yard run, the first touchdown of his career. Stanford finished with 560 total yards. Washington State (3-2, 1-1) was riding its first three-game winning streak since 2006 and was trying to start 4-1 for the first time since 2003, the last time the Cougars went to a bowl game. Instead of pulling off a stunning upset that would have signalled another step in their resurgence, the Cougars were left physically beaten and battered by the Cardinal. Quarterback Connor Halliday left in the third quarter, limping badly. Halliday was hit hard by Murphy on the pass Richards intercepted and took back for Stanfords first defensive touchdown. Halliday was slow to get up, but went out for the next play and after throwing a swing pass -- without being hit -- grabbed near his left hip and had to be helped off the field.dddddddddddd Moments later Austin Apodaca, Hallidays backup, was on the ground holding his midsection after a big hit from Kevin Anderson. Apodaca returned and was 15 of 29 for 138 yards and two late TD passes. Halliday was 24 of 36 for 184 yards and an interception. Stanford played without All-America left guard David Yankey, who was away from the team due to a family issue, and free safety Ed Reynolds was suspended for the first half after he was ejected last week against Arizona State for targeting. The Cardinal barely noticed they were gone and can now turn their attention to next weeks showdown against undefeated No. 16 Washington. Hogans first half was nearly perfect. He missed on his first pass, then connected on six straight, including the touchdown tosses to Cajuste and was excellent on third down. Hogan was 3 of 4 passing on third down and added another conversion with his legs. Cajuste came into the game with only six receptions all season. He broke free on a crossing route on the first TD running away from linebacker Cyrus Coen. It was the first passing touchdown allowed by the Cougars this season. Cajustes second touchdown came when he blew past Nolan Washington on a double move and was wide open for the 33-yard score and a 17-3 Stanford lead. He should have caught a third touchdown, but Hogans pass floated and Deone Bucannon raced over from safety for the interception. It was the first time this season Stanford failed to score inside the red zone. Washington States defence had been a strength during its strong start, but gave up 311 total yards in the first half, more than they had allowed in any game total during their winning streak. It appears the Dallas Stars will be without goalie Kari Lehtonen for the foreseeable future. Head coach Lindy Ruff confirmed on Sunday that his starting goalie has a head injury and the team will take it day by day. "We know hes not doing that well and we have to make a decision later on (today), but it doesnt look good though," Ruff told reporters. Lehtonen was run over in the crease by Minnesota Wild forward Erik Haula in the third period of Saturdays game in Dallas. Lehtonen fell backwards and hit his head on the crossbar while the impact of the collision knocked his mask off. The goalie was bleeding from the head and left the game. He was replaced by newly-acquired netminder Tim Thomas, who was making his Stars debut. Speaking after the game on Saturday, Ruff speculated as to the nature of the injury. "The likelihood is its a concussion on just a dirt play. It should be suspended - a fourth liner takes out our goaltender," said Ruff. OAKLAND, Calif. -- Sweating out a win against the NBAs worst team isnt usually a cause for celebration. For a franchise that has felt frustration and futility for most of the last two decades, Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson is making sure his players celebrate every milestone during their long climb back to contention. Stephen Curry had 31 points and 11 assists, Klay Thompson scored 29 and the Warriors moved 18 games over .500 for the first time in 20 years with a 115-110 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday night. "You can take it for granted. Theres people thats 19 years old thats never seen this. Thats a wow moment," Jackson said. "Its an incredible accomplishment, and weve still got a ways to go. But were going to park and enjoy it, take a deep breath, appreciate it and then continue to chase down our ultimate goals." Those goals -- making the playoffs, earning home-court advantage in the first round and winning a championship -- are all within reach, though some are further away than others. Golden State (44-26) remains in sixth place in the tight Western Conference standings, 1 1/2 games behind Portland and 2 1/2 games ahead of Memphis and Dallas with 12 games left. The Warriors also trail fourth-place Houston by three games. "We want to try and get that home court" in the first round, Thompson said. "Its in striking distance." The Bucks (13-56) were handed another blow in a season full of them when guard Nate Wolters broke his left hand fighting through a screen in the first half. Reserve forward Jeff Adrien also received three stitches above his left eye before coming back in the second quarter. Brandon Knight had 27 points and eight rebounds, and Ramon Sessions scored 18 for Milwaukee, which has lost six straight and nine of 10 as it finishes off a forgettable season. "My guys played a very competitive game. We put ourselves in great position once again. We just couldnt make the plays down the stretch," Bucks coach Larry Drew said. The Bucks, who lost in overtime at Portland on Tuesday night, surprisingly stayed with the Warriors most of the game until Curry and company found their touch late. On one play late in the fourth quarter, Curry dribbled to his left and was fouled by Khris Middleton when he tossed the balll up -- and in -- with his right hand and his back to the basket.dddddddddddd Curry shook his shoulders and waved his arms in celebration, and he completed the three-point play to give Golden State a 104-94 lead with 3:59 remaining. "Once I got the contact, I was able to get the ball above my shoulders to try to find the rim at some point. And obviously thats a lot of luck involved," Curry said. Milwaukee made one last run highlighted by Ersan Ilyasovas three-point play that sliced the Warriors lead to 108-105 with 56.2 seconds left. But Thompson quickly came back with a corner 3, and Curry made four free throws in the final seconds to seal a milestone win for the Bay Areas beloved basketball franchise. The last time the Warriors were 18 games over .500 was when they finished the 1993-94 season with a 50-32 record. They also remain on track to make the playoffs in consecutive years for the first time since the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons. The Warriors have five days off after hosting San Antonio on Saturday, and Jackson has been trying to balance winning with getting his banged-up players some rest. Starting swingman Andre Iguodala (right knee tendinitis) and backup centre Jermaine ONeal (rest) sat out for the second straight game. Iguodala also will miss the game against the Spurs, while ONeal is questionable. Milwaukee hardly gave Golden State a night off. After the Warriors went ahead by 10 early in the third quarter, the banged-up Bucks came roaring back. Milwaukee took advantage of some sloppy turnovers by Golden State to go up 66-65. David Lee, who finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds, helped the Warriors put together a brief spurt capped by Jordan Crawfords 34-footer over Giannis Antetokounmpo as the quarter expired. Crawford hit another 3-pointer at the start of the fourth to stretch the lead to 10, and the Warriors held on late. NOTES: The Warriors are 13-4 since the All-Star break, tied with San Antonio for the most wins during that time. ... Drew confirmed C Larry Sanders will not return this season because of a broken right orbital bone. Sanders was injured Feb. 8 against Houston and had surgery shortly afterward. ... The Bucks have lost 11 straight games when theyve allowed 100 points, while the Warriors have won 10 in a row when theyve scored 100 points. ZURICH, Switzerland -- Lionel Messi, Franck Ribery, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Neymar are among 23 candidates on the short list for the Ballon dOr announced by FIFA on Tuesday. Ribery, who won UEFAs best player in Europe award for the 2012-13 season, helped Bayern Munich win the Champions League and Bundesliga and German Cup titles. Messi, winner of the last four Ballon dOr awards in voting by coaches, team captains and media, was injured late in the season and could not prevent Barcelona from being beaten by Bayern in the Champions League semifinals. Neymar joined Messi at Barcelona this season after a move from Santos in his native Brazil, while Welshman Bale moved to Real Madrid from Tottenham in September for 100 million euros, the richest transfer in football history. Another nominee was Liverpool forward Luis Suarez, who missed the start of the 2013-14 Premier League season while serving a 10-game suspension for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic during a Premier League game in April. The Ballon dOr, or world player of the year, winner will be announced Jan. 13 in Zurich. Two now-retired managers -- Alex Ferguson of Manchester United and Bayerns Jupp Heynckes -- are among 10 nominees for FIFAs coach of the year award. ------ Ballon dOr nominees (alphabetical order, nationalities): Gareth Bale (Wales), Edinson Cavani (Uruguay), Radamel Falcao (Colombia), Eden Hazard (Belgium), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Sweden), Andres Iniesta (Spain), Philipp Lahm (Germany), Robert Lewandowski (Poland), Lionel Messi (Argentina), Thomas Mueller (Germany), Manuel Neuer (Germany), Neymar (Brazil), Mesut Ozil (Germany), Andrea Pirlo (Italy), Franck Ribery (France), Arjen Robben (Netherlands), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), Bastian Schweinsteiger (Germany), Luis Suarez (Uruguay), Thiago Silva (Brazil), Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast), Robin Van Persie (Netherlands), Xavi (Spain). Coach of the year nominees (nationalities, teams): Carlo Ancelotti (Italy, Paris Saint-Germain/Real Madrid), Rafael Benitez (Spain, Chelsea/Napoli), Antonio Conte (Italy, Juventus), Vicente Del Bosque (Spain, Spain national team), Alex Ferguson (Scotland, Manchester United, retired), Jupp Heynckes (Germany, Bayern Munich, retired), Juergen Klopp (Germany, Borussia Dortmund), Jose Mourinho (Portugal, Real Madrid/Chelsea), Luiz Felipe Scolari (Brazil, Brazil national team), Arsene Wenger (France, Arsenal). ASHBURN, Va. -- Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis wants everyone to know that his latest NFL suspension resulted from taking a supplement that contained a banned substance -- and not a repeat of the recreational drug use that got him into trouble in the past. The NFL announced Wednesday that Davis has been suspended indefinitely without pay for violating the leagues substance abuse policy. It is his second substance-abuse suspension -- he sat out the final four games of the 2011 season after testing positive for marijuana. "I would like to clarify the circumstances that resulted in my current suspension," Davis said in a statement released through the NFL Players Association. "In the past, I made the mistake of knowingly ingesting a banned substance. For over two years, Ive worked very hard to eliminate marijuana from my life, and I have not had a positive test for it since 2011. "Unfortunately, a couple of months ago I took a supplement that contained a banned substance. I now know that supplements are not regulated by the FDA and may contain banned substances. The NFL Policy is strict, and not knowing that a supplement might contain a banned substance doesnt excuse a violation of the policy.dddddddddddd" NFL players are regularly briefed on the leagues drug policy. Davis is a six-year veteran, a second-round selection by the Redskins in the 2008 draft. Davis said he has been working with the league and players union to "resolve this violation" and that he will be permitted to apply for reinstatement in the fall. "I look forward to staying in football shape, remaining in compliance with the NFL policy, and having a chance to get back on the field to contribute to a teams success next season," the statement said. Davis appears unlikely to return to the Redskins. He is set to become a free agent next month, having signed a one-year deal in 2013 with the hope of producing big numbers that he could parlay into a hefty multiyear contract when he hit the open market. Instead, he caught only seven passes and was passed on the depth chart by rookie Jordan Reed. Davis also admitted to nodding off during team meetings and voiced a desire to play for another team after he was put on the inactive list for multiple games. Davis has 162 career receptions for 2,043 yards. His best season was 2011, when he had 59 catches for 796 yards before his first suspension.
